Region
Karusi, Eastern Burundi.
Burundi’s coffee is grown at high altitudes in the rich volcanic soil of regions like Kayanza, Ngozi and Karusi. These ideal growing conditions contribute to the coffee’s bright acidity, fruity and floral notes, and complex flavours. Burundian coffee is largely produced by smallholder farmers who use traditional methods, ensuring a high level of care and quality.
Producer
Washed and sun-dried on African beds

Various small holder producers working with Burundi Sweet Coffee and processing their cherries at their Karusi wet mill.
Founded by a private entrepreneur and officially commencing operations in April 2023, Burundi Sweet Coffee (BSC) represents one of the most dynamic and ambitious recent additions to the Burundi coffee industry. While still in its inaugural startup phase, the company has rapidly distinguished itself through its strategic vision and, critically, its assembly of an exceptional and experienced management team deeply rooted in the local coffee sector. This combination of entrepreneurial drive and seasoned expertise positions BSC for significant future growth.
BSC’s first major step was the acquisition of a key washing station located in the Karusi province, situated in eastern Burundi. Currently, Burundi Sweet Coffee manages and maintains several thousand mature coffee trees within this region, providing a reliable baseline for cherry supply. However, the company’s ambitions stretch beyond its current geographic footprint.
BSC has already secured a site in Muyinga, a province located in north-eastern Burundi. This location is earmarked for the construction of a brand-new, state-of-the-art washing station. This expansion into Muyinga signals BSC’s commitment to extending its reach, diversifying its supply chain, and increasing its overall processing capacity, further solidifying its presence as a serious and rapidly expanding force within the national coffee landscape. The development in Muyinga is a key component of the company’s mid-term strategic growth plan.
